Latest progress report on the Sri Lankan Orphanage Appeal

At last we have had a grant from the Lions clubs International Foundation towards the supply of equipment for the Vocational Training Centre in Batticaloa approved.

Today a cheque is being sent for the sum of £9,300 to Rev. Jeyanesan. £6,000 will be spent on the printing shop project. The rest of the money will be used by Rev. Jeyanesan towards the welfare of the children wherever it is needed.

The response after the Tsunami from the general public has been overwhelming. Equally humbling is the effort by a number of organisations and individuals towards our own Orphanage project. Our special thanks to the following;

In addition a further sum of approximately £2000 has been sent directly to Rev. Jeyanesan immediately after the Tsunami to help with urgent immediate needs. Don has been very active in canvassing in the South Wales. He has been instrumental in raising well over £2000. The total contribution since the project started stands around £16,000.

Please remember that there are now even more orphans than before because of the Tsunami. The ethnic war and the Tsunami together have made these children parentless and homeless. It is only right that we support Rev. Jeyanesan in every way possible in his effort to provide them with a home, an education and parent-like care.

When I spoke with him yesterday, he said that there is an urgent requirement for school uniforms and mattresses for these children. These were washed away during the Tsunami. The uniforms cost around £3.00 and the mattresses are around £9.00. The requirement is for about 400 uniforms and about 1000 mattresses. So, collecting for these will be our next project. Please respond generously.

I take this opportunity to thank you very sincerely for arranging the support necessary to start the Printing Shop Training Centre. It is very timely as we are going to start the new academic year of the St John's Vocational Training Centre. We will do everything possible to equip this Centre with all necessary machinery and equipments so as to provide a sound training programme.
